A new law in Dubai states that non-Muslim couples can obtain a civil marriage license in Dubai in just 24 hours!

On February 1, 2023, Federal Law No. 41 of 2022, also referred to as the New Personal Status Law, went into effect. For the first time, civil unions are now formally acknowledged in the UAE. The New Law aims to give non-Muslim expatriates more legal equality and protection if they insist on having the laws of their native country applied.

Civil marriage in Dubai

A particular kind known as a “civil marriage” is approved and performed by the government instead of a religious institution. As a result, they are viewed as a nonreligious option to church weddings and are frequently preferred by couples who identify with multiple religions. If they meet certain criteria, the new law allows foreign nationals to establish civil unions.

Eligibility requirements for civil Marriage in Dubai

The new law has listed the following requirements for foreign people to get married in Dubai:

  • Neither of them must be Muslim.
  • At least one of them must be living in Dubai.
  • They should be at least 21 or older.
  • They must provide a document to prove that they are both single.
  • They have to show up in person or through a representative.
  • They are required to submit original PDF versions of their IDs and other digital documents.
  • They must bring a copy of their Emirates ID, original passport, and Dubai residency permit when applying.
  • The documents must be completely certified by the UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, and the translation company used for the official Arabic translation must be approved by the UAE Ministry of Justice.

The documents required for Civil Marriage License in Dubai

If you are a foreign living in Dubai and you are planning to get married at Dubai, you need to know the following required documents:

  • If the couple obtains legal counsel, the concerned party is required to submit a Power of Attorney, according to the Dubai Courts website.
  • In order to prove that the couple is lawfully single, they must also present a certified copy of their marriage certificate from the embassy of their country of birth.
  • Both of them must submit their application along with copies of their current Dubai residency permits, original passports, and Emirates IDs.
  • Every paper needs to be translated into Arabic and certified.
  • The couple may start preparing their application process as soon as they meet the criteria outlined by Dubai Courts to be qualified to file for the civil marriage contract.
